How to Setup Mac Mail on a Shared Server

The following tutorial walks you through the steps of setting up the Apple Mail client (version 9.3 (3124) in the latest Mac OS Release - El Capitan (version 10.11.4). I’m running the client on a Mac Book Pro and using an email account from a shared server account.

We will be using the IMAP protocol as well as the secure settings for the setup.

For reference, the default email settings for setting email client are as follows:Non-ssl:

incoming mail server: mail. example.com port 143
outgoing mail server: mail.example.com port 587

note: “example.com” would be changed to the domain name you are using for the account.

SSL:

incoming mail server: secure##.inmotionhosting.com port 993
outgoing mail server: secure##.inmotionhosting.com port 465

note: “secure##” would be replace by secure “server#”. For example,if your server is ecbiz777.inmotionhosting.com, then the server secure id would be: secure777.inmotionhosting.com.

In order to setup the mail client, your email account must already be created on your shared server account. In this case, we’re setting up an email account using: teste@customercommunityimh.com

First, you need to launch Apple’s Mail client.

Click on MAIL
Click Accounts
Add OTHER Account
It will then ask you the type of account you’re adding. Select MAIL ACCOUNT.
You’ll then need to add the information for the email account you’re adding. It starts off with the NAME, EMAIL ADDRESS, and PASSWORD

Next, click on SIGN IN
You will then need to fill in the Incoming and Outgoing mail servers information as provided above. Remember that we are using the IMAP protocol. This is selected by default.

Once you have the server information added, the Apple email client will verify the server. If you have trouble validating the server, make sure to use the default ports (non-SSL) and it will should be able to connect. Using the SSL settings may require that you trust the self-signed certificate before you can use those settings.

Apple email allows you to use the mail account with Mail and Notes - select your preference to complete the setup.
